Joining Kitchener's Army
Harry and Annie were married on 9th March 1914 and their son Richard was born three months later on 31st May 1914.
Harry lived with Annie and her family at 44 Front Street. Following Kitchener's call for volunteers, he enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry in September 1914 in Durham City.
Harry was assigned to the 13th (Service) Battalion of the DLI. One of the newly formed battalions of Kitchener's new army (K3). These battalions were initially composed of volunteers and commanded by a mixture of retired/reserved officers and a few regular officers.
Due to the rapid expansion of the army and the lack of trained professionals, the new soldiers, non-comissioned and commissioned officers all needed to be trained at the same time.
